Born in Tokyo and currently based in Kyoto, Akiko Shintsubo works as a multi-faceted designer focusing on reconciliating human life and buildings that people have long since lost interest in and emptied out. She founded Yukashitatsuchikaze [lit. Earth and Wind under the Floor] as an independent organization that creates places and programs for both domestic and foreign artists/creators/researchers to reflect on and produce their work as well as to communicate with locals. Her projects take place in empty buildings in places like Uwajima and Nakajima in Ehime, and Nishijin in Kyoto. She also works as Planning Manager at Kengo Kuma and Associates.
